THE COACH'S BOX
A monthly feature containing tips and suggestions from the Club's coaches listed above as well as from other sources, which will be properly cited.
Playing in a Cross wind: Things to remember when playing in a cross-wind are (1) the wind will have a greater effect on your bowl as it slows and curves toward the head and (2) the wind will have the least impact on the narrowest profile of the bowl ie the running edge. Thus, if a crosswind is from your right, a backhand bowl will put the narrowest aspect of your bowl into the wind as it slows, and, from the other end, a forehand bowl will have the same effect. This, of course, must be supplemented by adjustments in your aiming point to counteract the fact that, in the early stage of your bowl, the flattest surface of your bowl will be subject to the full impact of the wind.

Accredited Umpires
The Club is fortunate to have seven nationally accredited Umpires. The role and responsibility of an Umpire is to be on hand to interpret the rules and laws of Bowls, to be able to settle disputes about same, and to make judgement on close measurements. Accordingly the Umpire must have a sound knowledge of the Laws and their application, and be well versed in the techniques of correct measurement.
Accreditation, therefore does not come lightly. A three month course with weekly tutorials, practical applications and a written exam are required, and the pass rate for the examination is set high.
Accreditation lasts for four years, and there are yearly seminars for those needing to renew their accreditation. Despite these requirements, umpiring could be an added source of enjoyment to your involvement in our sport. Further information can be obtained from the Bowls Australia website (see under Info for the link) or just speak to one of our Umpires, who are -:
Allan Costello, Jim Marshall, Tony Jeffery, Glenice Sabell, Julie Van Bob Selvey and Gill Tasker.
Playing Positions
